Infidels is the 22nd studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on October 27, 1983 by Columbia Records.

Produced by Mark Knopfler and Dylan himself, Infidels is seen as his return to secular music, following a conversion to Christianity, three evangelical records and a subsequent return to a less religious lifestyle. Many people pan his "religious" albums, but you have to understand the time and "layering" so to speak of a musician. Fisrt of all he was probably very depressed after the breakup of his marriage. I am guessing. A loss, jaded and depressed with humanity he turned to religion. Slow Train Coming is a masterpiece and Shot of Love isnt so bad either. I disagree that his "religious" albums were lifeless. Also it was natural that he turn to something new. A three album trilogy of every layer and or change of Dylan can be traced back to the beginning.
At any rate, he has never entirely abandoned religious imagery, Infidels gained much attention for its focus on more personal themes of love and loss, in addition to commentary on the environment and geopolitics. Also it featured his face in "bigness" on the cover. His religious albums werent allowed to have his image on the cover. at the time of its release, Infidels was considered to be Dylan's best poetic and melodic work since Blood on the Tracks.

Personally "Neighborhood Bully" was the first Dylan song I heard regularly and over and over on the radio. Perhaps "you have to serve somebody" from Slow train Coming was memorable and often repeated, but Neighborhood bully was like a teenage anthem. It was so catchy. Its funny how repetition sticks in our brain no matter if we liked it or not. (Ie, must I recall ALL of Duran Duran s radio hits? Unfortunately I do know them all).

The critical reaction was the strongest for Dylan in years, almost universally hailed for its songwriting and performances. The album also fared well commercially, reaching No. 20 in the US and going gold, and No. 9 in the UK. . The album was recorded and mixed entirely on digital recording equipment. So put that on your turntables you "original release" collectors purists. It really doesnt matter if you get a re release or original. Does it?
